It'd be pretty easy to check actually, and really quite legal. The part of Mac OS X that actually implements SMP is the kernel, which is part of Darwin. You can install Darwin without fear of repurcusions, on your toaster, if you want.

Isn't the version of Darwin underpinning OS X/Intel no longer Open Source ?

    I'm really tee'd off now.

Have avoided all websites except this forum thread for the last 3 hours and haven't gone near my email neither, then some b'stard comes in and drops a fat giveaway URL without even obfuscating it and telling us its a spoiler.

I even managed to look at google finance to check the aapl share price without seeing any giveaway news articles.

I'm not going to look at any specs and hope there's another small surprise or two in the keynote.

Git's each and everyone who's posted the leak or commented on it thinking well someone else has already let the cat out of the bag.

they should allow users to like or dislike iAds to help cater the iAds that are sent to the user

Now this is a killer idea. Allowing users to activly decide what types of ads they see.

Equating destruction of physical property to turning off tv sets is a stretch.

Obviously. I was responding to the idea that is was somehow ironic (and funny) that such a low-tech device could disrupt such a high-tech show. There are many other low-tech ways to cause problems for exhibitors. You can't have an open, accessible show floor and protect against everyone's idea of a "prank." Exhibitors have to be able to trust that attendees, especially press credentialed attendees, won't make them look foolish in order to drive traffic to their blogs.

Anyway, I hope you took notice of the real point of my comment:
If pranks like these become more common, companies and trade shows will start to put severe restrictions on who's allowed to attend their events.

    That's nothing to laugh about.

Compare the MBA to this sony notebook with similar specs:

    http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&categoryId=8198552921644507782&parentCategoryId=16154&XID=O:sony%20tz:dg_vinb_gglsrch

Whoa! Had no idea sub-notebooks cost that much.

If apple is trying to break into that market then maybe they do have something in MBA.

I think my disappointment (and that of many others) may stem from the fact that they really didn't come out with anything for me.

TV untethered from a computer + price drop + iTunes movie rentals is interesting. So is Time Capsule. Not earth-shaking enough, though, to make me run to the apple store this instant.

And $20 for iPod touch software. I don't own one, but I'd feel like I got screwed if I did.

The MW exhibitors should do this (http://www.tuaw.com/2008/01/13/macworld-exhibitor-tip-disable-the-ir-port-on-your-macs/) to void the snafu that happened @ CES '08.. :D :o

looking forward to what iTV will bring... It's an interesting product given that Apple is predominately a software/ computer company.

The click wheel interface was, in fact, a key element in the astounding (and that's putting it mildly) success of the iPod.

I thought everyone knew this already.

In case you haven't noticed, they've redefined computing almost overnight. They're now building on that. They've got the competition completely flummoxed. They're pushing the industry forward with their apparent non-innovations.

I thought the iPod succeeded due to integration with an online music source, as well as finally being a useable HD based mp3 player.

I wasn't aware computing had changed. Please detail this.

it would be great if apple would put up a video feed of the keynote live.

if not that, put it in the local apple stores.
wildcowboy and I will go post on the apple site suggesting this idea, perhaps steve will then follow our idea 9 minutes latter and ubermac can thank him for it;)

People who have made history have just been people and gay or straight have never come into it. What does it matter? A stand alone class in college on "gay studies" I would have no problem with. The requirement in public schools to teach gay history is bit absurd.

Those who are gay and feel as if they've been wronged, I feel for them and effort to make it right, but the level of suffering by gay is nothing compared to what black people or women have endured over the centuries. It bothers me a little when gay suffrage is pitted against something like slavery. Just not the same, IMO.

That answer is very similar to the posts in the thread about the video apple just did in support of the IT GETS BETTER campaign. Nobody is pitting the gay community against slavery. Nobody is saying lets stop teaching about women's rights and start instead with gay rights. They are just adding it. Why do people always have to make this weird connection?

    Looks like Roambi??
    Second guess is MicroStrategy
Could very well be, but I haven't seen that particular coolness demoed anywhere. Maybe an upcoming version of one of those, or some other business data visualizer?

    2. There won't be a Microsoft AppStore for Windows INTEGRATED INTO WINDOWS. EVER. Why? Because they can't for LEGAL reasons...
Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't the Windows Live Marketplace in Windows Vista a integrated (badly integrated but still integrated), App Store before it was discontinued due to lack of consumers and made to redirect to a Microsoft website that sold some products?

Maybe they should just work with Rockbox and make a third party firmware that opens up the iPod to a new open DRM and forget Fairplay compatibility...

But what's the point of that? So a few geeks can hack their iPod to play whatever?

Opening Fairplay to other companies opens the iPod to other services. The biggest risk to Apple is the opening of Fairplay to other MP3 manufacturers.

Besides... the more I think about it, the more I don't see why iTunes wouldn't play the compatible Fairplay songs. Apple can't make any major changes to the existing DRM in files to break compatible Fairplay files.... since they would have then have to reencode all of those files sitting on people's hard drives.

DVD Jon had previously circumvented Fairplay's DRM in 2003 (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2003/11/20031122001549.shtml), and since then multiple other tools have appeared to provide similar functionality for updated versions of Quicktime/iTunes. Jon is also credited for developing an algorithm named deCSS to strip a DVD of its encryption (called Content Scrambling System, or CSS), hence his nickname.

Similar for updated iTunes? Is there something that hacks the DCC in recent/current versions of iTunes? I thought they broke a few versions back and recent DRM hasn't been hacked.

They sued over the asteroid thing, and that wasn't even a new idea. Tons of devices do what the asteroid was going to do.

They sued over the release of specific inside information. It doesn't have to be a "new idea" for product info to have value.

Apple is still committed to DRM. When they offer Apple Lossless files for download with CD-writing still enabled then I'll accept that Apple is DRM-ambivalent. Right now they aren't. And with $2 TV shows the bandwidth argument no longer holds water.

Of course they're committed. The issue isn't bandwidth, it's that it's a condition the content owners insist on in exchange for apple being able to sell their product.

Patting down children is ridiculous. Anyone who's angry enough to blow up their own child on an airplane isn't going to be deterred by what we all sarcastically refer to as TSA "security".

How about we stop giving people reasons for blowing up planes? That would be easier and cheaper, but would also require an unwanted soul-searching moment for our entire society.

Thye paid for it . You didnt. How is your friends having OSX helping you get it legally.

Sorry should have made it clearer...
I will lend my computer to them and we will just mess with this at his home.
(Almost certain this is allowed by local law)
After were done I'll format, and i will go buy a mac if i was pleased with Osx.

Just saying i won't do anything illegal.
