AMD's 386 and 486 clones were always cheaper than Intel's, and they always at least matched the clock-for-clock performance of Intel's direct counterparts.

But back in those days, Intel always had a faster CPU on the market somewhere. Eg: when AMD's 386s were at 40Mhz (vs Intel's 33), Intel had 486s. When AMD's first 486s came out, Intel had 486DX2s, when AMD's clock-multiplied 486s appeared, Intel had the Pentium. Etc.

AMD having the fastest chip on the market - which they only did for about 50% of the last 5 years, despite their general dominance - is very much a blip on the radar.

AMD have, however, often ruled the price/performance ratio at the lower, end, I'll grant - but in that market they have been plagued by buggy chipsets and cheap, low-quality motherboards. VIA has done more to hurt AMD's acceptance in the mainstream than Intel could ever have hoped to do.

I suppose there could be a bit of news here for non-photographers.

As I understand it, Aperture uses OS X's built-in RAW image processing. If I remember rightly, the last Aperture update accompanied an OS X update. So it's possible 10.4.8 could be just around the corner (i.e. sometime this week?)

As a former BBY employee I can tell you a few things that are flawed.

#1 no former or current Best Buy employee would call themselves BBemployee, BBYEmployee would seem more likely. I know its stupid but it is the culture of Best Buy to shorten it to BBY.

#2 You would have no clue if Best Buy was in trouble. As a simple Blue Shirt or even a Black Shirt you would not have this information passed down to you.

#3 Your rant show that you either hate Best Buy for personal reasons or possibly a former employee who has a huge vendetta against the company.

#4 Your rant does nothing to support this discussion.

#1: Gonna log into Employee Toolkit with my 6-digit number preceded by a letter. Gonna check my Action Center. Gonna run an OMS for delivery and some GSI. Gonna do a lookup in RSS. Gotta print some signs in Sign Monitor. Gonna hit F4 to do some employee price checks. Gonna log into Learning Lounge to do some training. Gonna not care about being a monthly Cyber Star.

    Satisfied?

If not, I could do something right now that apparently you couldn't. I could actually log in to countless Best Buy employee websites and provide proof to anyone else that can still log in that I am in fact logged in and viewing up to date information. Can you tell me what the latest 5 eLearnings posted are? I can.

Maybe you're the one making all this up.

I doubt it, because I guess I'm not as instantly and intensely skeptical of someone who claims to be a current or former Best Buy employee (imagine that...) considering we're on a tech forum (people nerdy enough to work at Best Buy posting on a tech forum?!?) and Best Buy is the biggest electronics retail chain in the country (I think I see a break in the clouds...).

This would be especially true if person claiming to be a current or former employee knows the term BBY at all. Hell, I'd believe them for my own sake, as I don't want to believe in a world where anyone outside of the Best Buy "family" would ever be concerned with such trivial things.

Oh yeah...Ego. And check your hot zones.

#2 Did I claim that I knew Best Buy was in trouble? No.

#3 I felt I was actually quite fair and even defensive of Best Buy in many regards. It was a bit of a rant, but directed as much to the conspiracy theorists thinking that Best Buy is evil as the company which I (and just about anyone with a brain and a little knowledge of economics) think is lost.

#4 Again, the "rant" as you call it was an attempt at dispelling the unreasonable idea that Best Buy is really out to get the customer at every turn. It was what I feel an objective analysis of the situation from the standpoint of an employee who's involved enough to know the inner workings, but not invested enough to be biased. I was very clear about the fact that I am not exactly a fan of Best Buy as a company.

I wonder what the special promotion is.

Probably in the form of "bundles" where you're required to buy an iPad with their special accessory packs just so they can push overpriced accessories out of the door.

Windows are purely OS for "work enviroment". OSX is for casual stuff.

Cant imagine using freakin Miranda/ICQ/Trillian/Digsby piece of crap with MS Movie Maker and so on.

Same as i cant imagine using Outlook/Excel on Mac OS.

Windows is like Semi, gigantic ugly looking utility vehicle. Mac OS is like convertible ferrari - nice pus.sy magnet for everyday casual use.

for a single phone to sell 4million, i think thats amazing!

rim only has 20% more smartphone holding and think of all the versions that it has and how many years has the blackberry been around? atleast 5, problaby way more then that.

yes, 5 million were expected, so without saying it outright, steve admits the iphone has not performed as expected.

note also his omission of the two biggest iphone news items: the price drop shortly after release, and the big "F.U." and subsequent backtrack concerning unlocking the phones.

of course, he's within his right to try and accentuate the positive...:apple:

Considering the Finder, where a slider had 3+ options to select, the user would eventually get frustrated. They could have kept it and added the same blue colour to the text or option being selected.

Why do we assume that the person using it is an idiot? What was so confusing about it? It takes two seconds to get use to it.

I think inverted scrolling has the potential to confuse people more and is probably harder to get use to.

Please, this conversation is so 2005...

November 17, 2005 (Computerworld) -- Turner Entertainment Networks has its lenses focused on holographic storage for the future of storing and retrieving its movies, cartoons and commercial spots. The network giant has completed a test of the cutting-edge storage technology, which it said will soon move the company away from tape- and disk-based storage.
"The holographic disk promises to retail for $100, and by it will have capacity of 1.6TB each. That's pretty inexpensive," said Ron Tarasoff, vice president of broadcast technology and engineering at Turner Entertainment. "Even this first version can store 300GB per disk, and it has 160MB/sec. data throughput rates. That's burning. Then combine it with random access, and it's the best of all worlds."

Optware is now neighbors with its only other U.S. competitor, InPhase Technologies Inc., which is also in Longmont. InPhase said earlier this year that it will begin shipping its own 300GB drive by the end of next year.
Holographic disks can attain far higher density of data storage than standard magnetic disk drives, which store data only on the surface of a disk. Holographic disk technology allows data to be stored as a holograph throughout the polymer material that makes up a disk.

Optware also plans to release a holographic disk product for streaming video that's targeted at the film and broadcast industries, and a consumer disk product that is about the size of a credit card with 30GB of capacity.

Macworld.co.uk reports (http://www.macworld.co.uk/news/index.cfm?NewsID=15415&Page=1&pagePos=3) that Apple has provided an intial response to Norway's Consumer Council regarding Apple's Digital Rights Management and the terms of service in Apple's iTunes Music store.

The contents of the response are not yet public, but Macworld.co.uk claims that "the contents of the letter could determine the future of the iTunes music store in Norway, Sweden and Denmark."

The initial complaint filed (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/06/20060606203834.shtml) was based on Apple's Digital Rights Management protection that accompanies every iTunes song sold. Apple's DRM reportedly violates the Norwegian Copyright Act because the songs can only be played on Apple's iPod.

The French legislature recently received (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/06/20060630152628.shtml) a lot of attention for trying to pass a similar law in France. There was speculation that Apple would withdraw iTunes from France if the law came into effect. In the end a softened version of the law passed in France and has had no immediate effects on Apple iTunes France.

I can't believe how much smugness is in this thread. It almost makes me ashamed to call myself an iPhone owner.

Sure, it is the best-looking phone on the market, but come on people... it's still just a phone. It costs the same amount as any other new high-end phone with contract ($199, which is what I paid for my RAZR 2 when it came out). The OP perceiving other people's difference in taste (they chose Android) hardly equates to "envy". All phones have their pros and cons, and people choose what they want accordingly. The fact that you even came to that conclusion of "they envy me" just contributes to how smug you are.

It's great that you love your phone. I love mine too. But don't be so full of yourself... that's what gives iPhone owners a bad name, hence the stereotype.

So again, it's a freaking phone... It's not a status symbol.

The poor kid simply hit the "cash" button before typing in the total. I used to work at BB (now an attorney), so I feel sorry for the kid. The OP committed retail theft by knowingly leaving the store with a product he didn't pay full value for (differentiated from receiving a computer by mistake because of the intent requirement). If the kid is not fired he will surely be written up and never able to move upward in the company to get things like health insurance and other benefits. What's worse is that this is the time of the year when BB takes on a lot of new hires.

It's sad to see people surprised at "morality police" coming out against the OP. He committed a freaking crime! Worse, he thinks he deserved to do it because he was a good boy and didnt steal the lady's iPhone earlier...

I doubt it will do any good, but I'll do my part and forward this thread to some friends at BB corporate. I'm sure they could track down the receipt and let the kids gm know why his register was off by that amount and that it wasn't internal theft. They'd also give the GM OP's info from his rz card, which could be amusing... :)

What is the law (or for these purposes, a crime) and what is ethically "right" or "good" are not always the same thing.

Acting morally is not necessarily equal to acting legally.

You do realise that's a Touch screen on that Asus all-in-one right ? You also realise HP's all in one has had a touch screen for a while. Yet the day Apple ships a touch screen iMac, you can bet a lot of people here will think they were the first to do it.

Yeah, not to mention Sony's use of chicklet keyboa... err.. wait, Apple took that idea from them and not the other way around. ;)

Umm, a touch screen on a computer like that is really stupid because if your using it solidly for more than 1 hour your arms would fall off

And people kept telling me that OSX and iOS weren't going to merge in any meaningful manner for years ahead, if ever. Yeah right. I'd bet the one after this has them nearly fully merged and I mean towards iOS for the most part. OSX will be dumbed down to the lowest common brain cell and you won't be able to get free/open software anymore. It'll have to come through the App Store or not at all. Wait and see. That is the point I'll be moving on.

Thumbs up to you, man. I'll be passing the Lion for some flavour of Linux as well.

Apple needs to start working on a new business model while the studios are still suing their customers and the TV boom is still on. If they dont they're going to be beaten overseas. Enough with the legal rhetoric damn it, evolve your business model or you'll lose.

Just wait, it will eventually play

Ummm.. just out of curiousity.. when you say 'eventually' do you mean 1 minute? 5 minutes? 30 minutes? 90 minutes?

I have been waiting here for 15 minutes and it's still not playing..

You'd think they would just not make it available until they could meet demand..
